Serious Crash on Route 30 Requires Rope Rescue and Multi-Agency Response

November 5, 2025

On 11/04/2025 , Southwest Greensburg Fire Department was dispatched to Route 30 at the Route 119 eastbound off-ramp for a reported vehicle rollover with ejection.

While responding, updates from Greensburg Police advised that the vehicle was located deep in the woods, well off the roadway, with at least one person ejected. Upon arrival, Mutual Aid Ambulance was already on scene and confirmed that the crash site was not easily accessible.

Crews repositioned onto Route 30 and quickly began developing an access plan. The vehicle had traveled off the roadway, down a steep embankment, and came to rest on its side in a creek bed, hidden from view. Firefighters from Truck 24, Rescue 32, and Rescue Pumper 24 worked together to light the scene from multiple sides while rope systems were set up to guide personnel and equipment safely down the hillside. Chainsaws were used to cut a path through dense brush to reach the patients.

Two occupants were located—one unresponsive and one with serious injuries. Due to the terrain, a Stokes basket system was used for patient extrication out of the wooded area. Additional manpower was requested from Rescue 26 and Rescue 79 to assist with the technical rescue operation. Both patients were transferred to awaiting EMS crews and later flown by medical helicopter to regional trauma centers.

Once patient care was complete, crews remained on scene to assist the Pennsylvania State Police with lighting and scene safety for crash reconstruction and vehicle recovery. A light tower was provided through the Westmoreland County Department of Public Safety, and vehicle removal was handled by Lander’s Towing.

Units cleared the scene after several hours, turning control over to PSP and PennDOT.

Southwest Greensburg extends thanks to our mutual-aid partners from Greensburg, South Greensburg, Youngwood, and Hempfield Township for their cooperation and professionalism during this challenging incident.
