Nathan Kristoff, 23, noticed the high quality of training and equipment that Southwest Greensburg Fire Department had to offer and decided to join as a volunteer firefighter.
“It’s a lot nicer to come here because they have everything you need,” he said.
Nathan’s family has been involved in the fire service in nearby Mount Pleasant for many years. He began volunteering nine years ago at the age of 14.
“I got started because of my family, and then I just took off with it,” Nathan said.
When he turned 18, Nathan began applying for full-time firefighting positions. He now works full-time in Frederick, Maryland, as a firefighter — but he continues to volunteer back home with Southwest Greensburg Fire Department.
“I just love it,” Nathan said. “Here at Southwest Greensburg, there’s a lot more variety of what I can do.”
Nathan takes pride in community involvement, and he says that being a volunteer is “a lot more than fighting fires.”
“These are all my friends, my brothers… they’re like family,” Nathan said. “We’re going on fire calls, we’re helping the community, but we're also hanging out together and having fun.”
