When Justin Schell, 38, says he grew up in the fire station — it’s not too far from the truth.
Schell’s childhood home was located just a few houses away from the Southwest Greensburg Fire Department where his father served as a volunteer firefighter. He fondly remembers spending nearly every day at the station as a child with his family and friends who grew up in the neighborhood.
“My dad was doing it, and he was very active,” said Justin, Fire Captain. “I started doing it and spent every day here as a kid.”
When he turned 18, Schell eagerly entered the department’s Live-In Program. Within two years, he and eight other volunteers around his age were living at the station and responding to calls together.
“The Live-In Program was one of the best experiences that I ever had, and it really helped grow some of my best friendships,” Justin said. “It was literally like we were all brothers, and we lived in the same house… always ready to respond to calls.”
Schell now works at US Steel in Braddock as a firefighter, and also serves as a part-time firefighter with the City of Jeannette.
“It’s been a family thing, and it’s something that never gets old to me,” Justin said.
