Tony “Rusty” Hunter, 26, recommends becoming a volunteer firefighter to anyone who enjoys an adrenaline rush like him.
“It’s really one of those things where you have to be a certain kind of person to do it,” Tony said. “If you do enjoy the adrenaline rush, it’s definitely for you.”
Tony began volunteering at Southwest Greensburg Fire Department five years ago when a co-worker suggested he check out the department’s Live-In Program.
“I joined on at Southwest and I’ve been living there ever since, and I love it,” Tony said.
Tony is currently working on his EMT training with a goal of becoming a full-time firefighter. He says the high level of training at SWGFD has benefited him in his career aspirations.
“They don’t mess around when it comes to training,” Tony said. “They definitely make sure you get the right stuff, and I haven’t had to pay a dime for any of the training.”
As a volunteer, Tony enjoys helping the community, as well as the physical aspects required when responding to calls.
“I’m definitely a hose dragger,” said Tony. “Give me a line and let me go play with it. I love to do it.”
